History of the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre
History will show that Movies have been screened from the same site in the Roxburgh township since 1897. For this reason the Roxburgh Cinema is; the longest continuously running movie theatre in the world. A claim which is currently being considered by Guinness World Records.
Today the Roxburgh Cinema is operated as a Charitable Trust, a successful operation only made possible thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers whose efforts ensure that history is preserved. The main ethos of the volunteer team is based on a common understanding that the best rewards are earned through giving, and here at the theatre the giving of time is hugely appreciated. Due to this the cinema continues to operate as a valuable community asset, an essential gathering place for residents and visitors to the town.
All proceeds received from movie screenings go towards maintaining, improving and updating the facility. This has allowed the committee to fund a major upgrade of the facility in the late 1990’s, and more recently, the purchase of a digital cinema projector. Future improvements include a planned main theatre screen replacement and upgrades to the theatre sound system.
Is the main theatre available for hire?
The primary purpose for the venue is as a cinema for movie screenings, however, the venue is regularly and effectively used as a theatre where events such as concerts, ceremonies, presentations, functions or conferences are held.
